All illustrations and photographs in b/w. This study of American frescoes and panels is the essential prelude to the Waring Stencil book. First published in 1926, the author roamed the countrysides and photographed the pictures which adorned the walls of our early manor houses. Included are picture panels from 9 houses, frescoes from 30 more, the great majority of which have now crumbled into decay. A special new feature are the wall stencils from the 1800 Drovers Tavern which is a part of The American Life Foundation's Old Village Preservation Project and which is sponsored by the Foundation which promotes this Series of Visual Art Classics.
