About This Item
London: Taylor and Francis, 1868 Ex-Library. Very Good. Hardcover. First Edition. In Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London for the Year MDCCCLXVII (1867) 672pp plus 26pp of presents received (donors) and 32 plates three of which include color. this is Parts 1 and 2 of Volume 157., a splendid book in three-quarter leather with five raised bands and marbled boards, marbled page edges with marbling worn through at the edges and some mild scuffing, and marbled endpapers front and back, overall very good. This copy was withdrawn from the US Library of Congress because they had another copy, It has also been withdrawn from the "Library Weather Bureau" and has their pocket on the front pasted-down endpaper. This contains the first appearance of Maxwell's seminal paper on the properties of gases. His 1860 paper assumed that gas molecules reacted like perfectly elastic balls. This paper corrects that assumption and presents inspiring mathematics where instead molecules repel each other with a force that increases exponentially to the nth power as the distance between them decreases. The mathematice was extreemly complex and his solution was brilliant..
