Lee Judah Ames (January 8, 1921 - June 3, 2011) was an American artist noted for his Draw 50... learn-to-draw books. His first job at age eighteen was at Walt Disney Studios. He has since led a career as an advertising artist, fine artist, cartoonist, designer, animation in-betweener, illustrator, and as an artist-in residence at Doubleday. His series of 26 Draw 50... books take a friendly and minimalist approach to teaching drawing while the books often contain no instructional text. He enlisted in the military and served as a second lieutenant during World War II. He was a recipient of the Inkpot Award. He has illustrated more than 100 books. Back cover states: Available for the first time in paperback, Draw 50 Famous Cartoons will teach you how to draw all of our favorite cartoon characters. With Lee J. Ames popular, step-by-step method exciting, realistic images will soon come to life from the pencil of even the most inexperienced novice. The reader must be exceptionally careful to reproduce the lines exactly, you you can achieve truly remarkable results in just a shot time using this book. Best of all, it's fun! So pick up your pencil, got out some paper, and starting learning to draw the Lee . Ames way today. One current illustrator reminisced on line: "I enjoyed drawing iconic cartoon characters, just like the characters in 'Draw 50 Famous Cartoons'. Fred Flintstone, Felix the Cat and Yogi Bear are all very distinct. What is it that makes them so distinct, so unforgettable? How is it that their personalities pop off the page? Is it their expression? Is it what they're wearing? Maybe it's in their posture? Or is it just how they're drawn? And isn't it amazing how a simple line can convey an emotion? This is something else I learned from Ames' books. You have to get that line just right. If you don't, the whole picture is off. Sometimes all it takes is a tiny mark of the pencil to turn a grumpy face into a, well, less grumpy face. So, yeah, these were the books that helped me learn to draw better when I was a kid, and they made quite an impression on me.
