Three scarce volumes of the works of English dramatist Nicholas Rowe, including the second edition of Rowe's 'Poetical Works'. Consisting of the 1728 two volume edition of Rowe's 'Dramatick Works', and the 1720 second edition of his 'Poetical Works'.Rowe's two volume dramatic works consists of eight plays with individual pagination and title pages, illustrated with six engraved plates.ESTC reference N67078The second edition of Rowe's poetry includes miscellaneous shorter pieces, alongside his 'Callipaedia' - with separate title page and pagination - and 'The golden verses of Pythagoras", "A poem upon the late glorious successes" and "Ode for the new year MDCCXVI', each with their own title page. This volume is illustrated with four engraved plates, but is lacking an engraved frontispiece.ESTC reference T42747With the armorial bookplate of Thomas Dawbarn to each pastedown, alongside the bookplate of Richard Luckett, a lecturer in seventeenth century literature at Cambridge University, who held the post of Pepys Librarian for thirty years.A wonderful collection of scarce editions of the poetry and plays of Rowe, who was considered to be the first editor of the works of William Shakespeare. Rebacked, in full calf bindings, with boards restored. Retaining the original endpapers. Externally, excellent, with the calf used for the back strip of volume I a darker shade than that of the following two volumes. Bookplates to front pastedowns. Internally, firmly bound. Pages age toned due to paper type, with light spotting throughout. Very Good
