The third in Penman's hugely popular and entertaining mystery novels set in the reign of Richard Lionheart, favorite son of Dowager Queen Eleanor of Aquitaine and featuring "Queen's Man" Justin de Quincy. In this entry, a ranson payment intended to be sent for Richard's release from German imprisonment vanishes in Wales, itself a maelstrom of rebellion and intrigue, and Elanor send de Quincy in saerch of it. Murder ensues.
