About This Item
New York: Farrar & Rinehart, Incorporated, 1933. First U.S. edition of 1,000 with page 61/62 excised and replaced w/tipped in page 61/62 and previously offending word now reading "sh-t." Publisher's device on verso of title page. Originally published in 1930 in Paris, this U.S. edition precedes the U.K. edition. Black full-cloth (buckram) boards, silver stamped spine titles, lt. shelf wear. Deckled linen pages, lt. wear, some tanning. Bind solid; hinges intact. Boards protected w/clear sleeve. Thirty poetical pieces of Ezra Pound's stations of existence. The bulk of Pound's work on The Cantos began after his move to Italy. Like all other great epics, it is the story of good and evil, a descent into hell and the progression to paradise. Its hundreds of characters fall into three groups: those who enjoy hell and stay there; those who experience a metamorphosis and want to leave; and a few who lead the rest to paradiso terrestre. Vintage owner's plate of Wilbur Chapman Goodson inside cover. Interestingly, a letter of correspondence from E.E. Cummings to Goodson is in the collection of University of Texas. Designed by Robert S. Josephy. Printed in the United States of America by J.J. Little and Ives & Sons, New York. 149 pages. Insured post.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" Tall.
