"BOTH DRACULA AND FRANKENSTEIN are names well known to motion picture buffs-and it is sometimes forgotten that before these famous tales were movies, they were compelling novels. Not only do these stories make spine-chilling and entertaining
reading also has considerable literary merit and deserves serious attention from every student of the Gothic novel.
Mary Shelley, wife of the immortal romantic poet, is the author of Frankenstein, which she had published anonymously in 1818. The creation of life from unliving matter was a subject discussed at great length in her circle. One morning, she awoke from a disturbed dream with an idea for a story that Shelley urged her to develop at greater length. The rest is history. Bram Stoker's classic came considerably later. Although he wrote eight other novels, only his eerie chronicle of Count Dracula, the Transylvanian nobleman who was also a human vampire, remains read today. Published in 1897, it took the book world by storm. A generation later, it enjoyed renewed success as a motion picture, with the Hungarian actor Bela Lugosi making a life career portraying the demonic count. This book includes both of these classics of Gothic fiction in a single volume. They are tales to chill you and to keep you reading to the very last page." THE PUBLISHER

LOUIS XVI Binding
Simple in design yet marked by rich dignity, the Louis XVI binding is used to distinguish the series of Great English Novels issued by the International Collectors Library. The original design, from which the American artist Rafael Palacios worked to produce this handsome binding, was found in a book entitled Les Aventures de Télémaque, Fils d'Ulysse, written by the 17th-century French archbishop and scholar Fénelon. This was one volume in a series of classics printed by order of King Louis XVI of France for the education of his son. The book's binding was the work of Nicolas-Denis Derome, one of 18th-century Paris' most renowned practitioners of that art. The original binding shown here was in red Morocco. The front cover bears an ornate frame of floral motif. The spine is divided into six ornamented panels by simulated grecque roll-tooling.
