About This Item

Chicago: A.C. McClurg & Co, 1910. Third edition. Hardcover. Very Good. 8vo. [9], 10-300, [2] (pages of publisher's advertisements) pp. Green cloth with gold lettering on the front board and spine, gold and black decorations on the front board. Illustrated with a frontispiece and seven black and white plates. With three contemporary newspaper articles from a Rockford, IL publication, and a handwritten note dated April 28, 1929 from one owner of the book to the next, stating "The Thwaites who edited the book on rivers is, or rather was, one of the great historical scholars of this country". The writer goes on to recommend that his friend look up Louise Kellogg of the Wisconsin State Historical Society: "She is about your age, stone deaf, but one of the most charming and likeable women I know - a real refutation of the theory that a woman P.H.D. held in the highest regard for her education in her field must note be likeable as a human being". Lakes in Madison, the Rock River, the Fox River, the Wisconsin River, and the Mississippi are depicted and discussed in this charming book. The author and his wife spent countless days canoeing and enjoying the beauty of these Midwestern waterways. A Very Good book with the front hinge gently cracked, a contemporary owner's inscription on the front pastedown, and a small pencil annotation or two in the text.
