About This Item
The author has produced a visual portrait of Dorset life that as well as completing his 'Camera Series'.The photographs in this book tell Dorset's story from the outbreak of the Great War in 1914 to the coming of peace at the end of the Second World War in 1945.They document one of the most exciting and remarkable periods of history, for not only does the book cover the eleven years of two World Wars but also the years of
peace.Years that brought the motor car and tarmac, the charabanc and tractor, the wireless, telephone, and mains electricity: all of them inventions that changed the face of Dorset and opened up its coombes and backwaters. The photographs are a record of recent times, and the reader will come across familiar memories and faces.
They come from over thirty sources, many of them private people who turned back the pages of their scrapbooks to help recapture the spirit of Dorset in the 20th century. Here are the cavalry and paddle-steamer,the model 'T' Ford and chain-driven bus; Churchill and T. E. Lawrence,American G.I.s packed into landing craft before D-Day,evacuated children,Land Girls
getting in the war-time harvest,Dorset's people and places, her towns and villages, all seen through the camera's eye during thirty-one vigorous and hectic years.
Themes represented include Goodbye to all that,The Great War,Helping to Win,Years of Peace (1919-1939),Beginning Again,Town life,Changing Dorset,The Countryman,Commerce, The Coastline,Farming,Events,The People's War 1939-1945, The Threat of Invasion,The Turn of the Tide and finally,D-Day to Victory.See also the previous sequential,alpha-numerical book ID (rja481514) for another title from this author's same series.
