Garden City, NY: Doubleday & Company Inc. This book was first published in 1949 and was the winner of the 1950 Newbury Medal. This edition states a 1949 copyright, but a list of titles by the author within includes books published up to 1964. This volume is circa 1964 when the last book in the list within was published. 8vo size blue clothbound hardcover with silver foil decoration on front cover and silver foil titles on spine; 121 pages with black and white illustrations and decorations throughout. Black and white illustrated endpapers. The full page illustrations within the book - black and white and color - have a blank reverse. There is one color two-page spread whose pages are also blank on the reverse. This work of children's fiction is set during the Middle Ages. The protagonist, a young boy named Robin, is sent away by his parents to become a knight like his father. He becomes ill and is abandoned, but rescued by a friar who take him to a monastery where he is cared for and learns many things, including how to find 'the door in the wall.' Marguerite de Angeli (1889 - 1987) was the author and illustrator of more than two dozen books and was the winner of multiple awards for both her children's books and her illustrations of children's books. We have several other books by the author/illustrator. Bumped and worn corners and head and heel of spine.
