About This Item

Kunming: Yunnan Art Publishing House, 1996. A photographic essay, lavishly illustrated and printed, on the material culture of the Naxi people, descendants of Tibetan nomads who settled in the Lijiang Valley of Yunnan, many centuries ago. The Naxi religion synthesizes Tibetan Lamaism, Daoism and far more ancient shamanistic beliefs, and is maintained by dongba, or shaman priests. Illustrations include the unique written language of the Naxi, a colourful pictographic alphabet employed only by this tribe. Photographs also detail the Naxi thanka styles and their sculptural art, the dongba ceremonial attire, and include views of the rugged terrain of the western Yunnan region occupied by this fascinating culture. 184 pp., 288 colour photographs, map, text in Chinese. Cloth. As New/As New. 25.5 x 26.5 cm.
