First published in 1769, this is physician William Buchan's best known work, in which he provides laypeople with detailed descriptions of the causes and prevention of disease, with the goal of 'laying medicine more open to mankind'. This work is a helpful guide to the cures of various illnesses and diseases, providing detailed descriptions of the prevention and causes behind diseases to the public.Catherine the Great, Czar of Russia, was so impressed by the work that she sent Buchan a gold medal and personal letter. ESTC reference T116394With the inscription 'Wentworth Day from Slingsby Hall Library July 1956' to the front pastedown. Wentworth Day was a British author and broadcaster known for his promoter of Agrarian Rights, and his interest in wildfowling.A lovely copy of this enormously popular and influential work; with over 80,000 copies and 19 editions sold in Buchan's lifetime, it was one of the most popular medical texts of the eighteenth century. In a full calf binding. Spine label renewed. Minor loss of leather at spine tail. Front joint starting, with board holding firm. Inscription to front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound.
