About This Item

London: Bradbury and Evans, 1848. [Classic literature] FIRST EDITION, EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED includes errata leaf within prelims, bound from the parts, without half-title. Octavo (22 x 15cm), pp.[xvi]; 624. Illustrated with frontispiece and vignette and a further thirty-eight plates, plus three additional portrait plates by H.K. Browne ('Phiz'). Period-style half brown oasis morocco over marbled sides. Discreet contemporary ownership to dedication, contents toned, plates browned and spotted as expected. A very good copy in an attractive recent leather binding. This landmark novel weaves together a number of stories concerning a self-important merchant and his two children. Dickens takes aim at arranged marriages, and along the way deals with child cruelty, broken and abusive familial relationships, and the fears elicited by the advent of the railway - which, towards the end of his life, Dickens was to experience for himself while writing Our Mutual Friend.
