About This Item
Seigniorial tenure was the form of land tenure introduced onto Canada during the French regime and that which existed at that time in France and was an outgrowth of the feudalism of the Middle Ages. It was also one of the chief causes of the French revolution, but in Canada the seigniorial system, because of the primitive conditions in New France, had a new lease of life; and it proved a not ineffective system of land tenure and settlement.
