About This Item

Little, Brown & Co. Very Good with no dust jacket. c1867. Hardcover. B&W Illustrations; 103 pages; John Bunyan was an English Christian writer and preacher, who is well known for his book "The Pilgrim's Progress." Though he became a non-conformist and member of an Independent church, and although he has been described both as a Baptist and as a Congregationalist, he himself preferred to be described simply as a Christian. He is remembered in the Church of England with a Lesser Festival on August 30, and on the liturgical calendar of the Episcopal Church (US) on August 29. . Antique English Theology & Philosophy Alexander Smith Preface Leather Binding. Width: 4.75" Height: 6.75". This is John Bunyan's emblem book for boys and girls. He cut the emblems and wrote the poems. The preface is by Alexander Smith. Emblem books are collections of allegorical illustrations. These books, popular in Europe during the 16th and 17th centuries, contained woodcuts or engravings with explanatory text--typically morals or poems. These emblems were meant to impart a moral lesson on the reader, subject to the reader's interpretation . Rebacked with the original full-leather boards with a well-preserved new spine showing raised bands and stamped gilt lettering. There is light external rubbing and toning. The original spine is preserved on a blank preliminary. Several preliminaries are loose. The work is profusely illustrated with emblems by Bunyan. Aproximately 50 emblems. .
