About This Item

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1960. Hardcover. 273p., first US edition clothbacked boards in dj, mild signs of handling and age, jacket a little nibbled at the head, good copy. Castillo's novel reflects his life---separated from his refugee Republican family by the Nazis at the age of 10, he spent the war in Germany. Repatriated to Spain after the war, he spent years in an orphanage and an institution for delinquent boys. Escaping the latter, he worked in a Catalan factory---and then secured admission to the Sorbonne. Despite his youth when his family fled to France, he writes, "[T]he Spanish Civil War has scarred me for life ... the conflict that ripped apart the country where I was born made me an exile and an alien.
