Little Brown & Co, 1984. 1st Edition. Soft cover. Fine. Wonderful set of 2 distinct proof states of the 4th Richard Jury novel from Martha Grimes. First is the commonly seen green wrappers proof with some handwritten as well as typed publication info on the front cover. Some previous corrections and handwritten page numbers (216) are printed on the leaves. Second is an earlier state bound manuscript, with a longer trim size, in gray wrappers with publicity quotes from previous books printed on the back cover as well comprising the front leaf of the proof. The pages number 271, and there are previous corrections throughout (printed). Laid in is an extra leaf (numbered 264?), and a letter from the sales manager at Little Brown stating the final page was inadvertently omitted from the proof, and is enclosed. There is also an SASE and letter from the same sales manager, dated a week prior, asking for a publicity quote from the recipient at the Mysterious Bookshop in New York. Both in fine condition, and from the Otto Penzler collection, the second being presumably quite scarce.
