Los Angeles: Echelon Book Publishers, Inc, 1967. 1st edition. Soft cover. Fine/No Jacket (as issued). Near Fine. Mass market paperback, 192pp, printed wrappers. An uncommonly fresh copy of this rare and bizarre exploitation paperback biography of Crowley, written by the enigmatic "James Harvey" in an exceedingly florid, quasi-literate style ("A Victorian sex-demon who believed in perversity as a dahlia trusts the sun"). Minor rubbing to covers, but tight and exceedingly well preserved for a work of this character (nicest copy I have ever seen).

Reading: Gedruckt fur Charles MWilliams, 1820. Hardcover. See Description. First American Edition. 12mo. 142p. With a dramatic woodcut frontispiece depicting the Anti-Christ as a seven headed dragon. Re-bound in quarter calf with marbled boards preserving the original calf spine. Title page shows age-toning, soiling and staining; a small darker spot of staining is present near the upper corner. The inside margin of the frontispiece is carefully restored with some spots of loss to the inner black border-line of the illustration. End papers are stained; notations in an early hand are scrawled on the front free end paper. Interior pages contain light age toning, scattered marginal foxing, soiling and wear. A German mystic named Christian Armbruster penned this apocalyptic work (first published in Germany in either 1813 or 1814). The author predicts the immanent end of days by comparing current events at that time i.e. the rise of the Emperor Napoleon to the prophecies in the Book of Revelation and in the Book of Daniel. Armbruster makes much use of dates and numerical mysticism. American editions of his book contain a frontispiece of a seven headed dragon and are falsely attributed to the more famous mystic Heinrich Jung-Stilling. [Uvarov 163 listing a Binnigheim, 1813 edition; Holzmann/Bohatta 9368 listing the Ulm, 1814 edition].

Description:
New York: Mason Brothers, 1853. 192 pages. Illustrated with in-text wood engravings. Binding is embossed brown cloth, with gilt lettering on front cover. Hiram Mattison (1811-1868) was a prominent Methodist minister in New York, who, in addion to his opposition to fraudulent psychics, was an active proponent of temperance and abolition of slavery. In this book he debunks his era's fad of "spirit-rapping" and other practices by which mediums or spiritualists claim to communicate with the dead. As Mattison states in the preface, spirit-rapping "is the grand climax of soothsaying, astrology, witchcraft, phrenology, mesmerism, clairvoyance, Psychology, Fourierism, Millerism, Mormonism, and all other superstitions, delusions, and isms that have ever been, or probably ever will be." The book is in about very good condition: clean and tight, with some minor edgewear and shallow chipping of cloth at head and foot of spine. Pages are moderately foxed. Previous owner's name…

Hulme, Keri: The Bone People. Louisiana State University Press, A tale of New Zealand. Stated United States First Edition, 1985. 450 pages, indexed. WINNER OF THE PEGASUS PRIZE FOR LITERATURE AND THE BOOKER PRIZE. Used. Very Good/Very Good unclipped original $17.95 dust jacket. Summary: "The Bone People, first published in 1984 by Spiral, New Zealand. About this book: The Bone People is an unusual story of love. It is unusual in the telling, the subject matter, and the form of love that the story depicts. This is in no way a romance; it is filled with violence, fear, and twisted emotions. At the story's core, however, are three people who struggle very hard to figure out what love is and how to find it. Hulme won New Zealand's Pegasus Prize for Literature (1984) for The Bone People. Then the book went on to win the prestigious Booker Prize (1985).
