About This Item

Carl Muquardt, Brussels and Leipzig: ., 1848 pp. x, 382 + 24 Hand-coloured lithographed plates. 8vo. 260mm. Original blue patterned cloth back. Black marbled boards with some wear. Hardbound. Very Good. See: Jay T. Snider "Collection of Historical Americana", his sale Christie's 21st June 2005, lot 250. First German edition, translated into German by Dr. Heinrich Berghous. First published in Swedish the same year. The text is an amalgam of an abridgement of Catlin's "Letters and Notes on the Manners, Customs, and Condition of the North American Indians" (1841) and his "North American Indian Portfolio" (1844). "McCracken notes that this edition, the first in German, was originally issued in eleven parts, with separate decorated paper covers, dated 1st eight parts, 1846; last three parts, 1847. Part eleven contains 24 hand colored plates" (Wagner-Camp). Howes C-243. Graff 630; McCracken 81; Sabin 11539; Wagner-Camp-Becker 84:13; Pilling 684. Continental editions of Catlin are quite scarce. This offered reduced-scale versions of the plates in the North American Indian Portfolio at a fraction of the cost. 'As graphic delineations of Indian hunting and dancing scenes, these plates rank next to those of Bodmer' - Howes.. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Good.
