Bartlett and Welford, 1848. First Edition. Hardcover. 412 pages. Dictionary and appendix arranged alphabetically. First edition (first printing). Publisher's original brown cloth with embossed design and gilt lettering on spine. A very good copy. Some loss to the spine ends. Foxed most noticably at the endpapers. One (?) page with marginalia. Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper: 'To the Hon. Hallibarton with the compliments of John Russell Bartlett / New York Sept. 25, 1848.' With bookplate of Victor de Guinzbourg, UN diplomat and noted proverb and aphorism collector on the front pastedown.
