Fine interior includes 681 indexed pages with over 500 illustrations, maps and photogravures - some tissue guarded. Williams (1842-1922) was the first GM of the De Beers Consolidated Mines, which once produced 95% of the world's diamond yield. Chapter on notable historical diamonds, discovery of diamonds in South Africa, development of mines, mining techniques adopted, welfare of the miners and history of the whole diamond-producing region. Appendix, which describes the mechanical workings of winding engines and pumps, and the value of different types of coals.
