About This Item
London: Gollancz, 1929. First Edition. Inscribed and signed by the author, L.A.G. Strong, to the noted Los Angeles book collector, Ingle Barr, with an amazing long inscription. The book, the author’s first novel, is inscribed: “For Ingle Barr. This story was first imagined as a poem. A gypsy and her daughter beg for shelter on a stormy night when the signs are are clear that Death will ride. They are let in; and when presently the dread sounds are heard, the gypsy hypnotizes her daughter and sends the girl’s spirit out on the moor to watch and report. Though she knew nothing about this poem, the novelist Romer Wilson, who had second sight, told me that in three years I would write a successful novel, and that the germ of it was already in my head. I could not believe her - and only remembered the prophecy after the novel had in fact succeeded, in spite of not finding its direction for several chapters. L.A.G. Strong, Dec. 1957.” Additionally, the book is signed by Strong on the dedication page. Very fine in a near fine dust jacket with some slight dust soiling.
