About This Item

Burbank, CA: Warner Brothers, 1938. Final Draft script for the 1939 film, copy belonging to director William Clemens, with his name faintly visible on the well-worn front wrapper, and with annotations in manuscript pencil on every page except two, as well as many of the versos. Although the front wrapper and registration page identify the script as "Part I," the script presented here is the complete Final Draft.

Boris Karloff stars as Dr. Charles Gaudet, a well-respected surgeon sentenced to ten years on Devil's Island for treating a wounded revolutionary, and incurs the wrath of the brutish commander for speaking out against the inhumane conditions.

Shot on location in the Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanic Garden.

Blue titled wrappers, lacking rear wrapper. Distribution page present, with receipt intact. Title page present, with credits for screenwriters Kenneth Gamet and Don Ryan, and story credits for Anthony Coldewey and Raymond L. Schrock. 137 leaves, with last page of text numbered 125. Mimeograph duplication, rectos only, with blue revision pages throughout, dated variously between 6/21/38 and 7/12/38. Pages Very Good overall, with dampstaining on several pages, and last page separated from the binding, Front wrapper Poor, detached and well worn. Pages bound with two gold brads.
