About This Item

New York, NY, U.S.A.: W. W. Norton, 1990. 1st Edition 2nd Printing. Hardcover. Mint/New. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Signed by author on title page with black sharpie. The time is 1948. The town is Los Angeles. The hero is Easy Rawlins, an out of work black war veteran. The mortgage payment's coming due, so Easy accepts the assignment of finding Daphne Monet, a blonde torch singer with a penchant for jazz and criminal black consorts. In his search through a sleazy, fearful city, Easy is lucky to be under the protection of the murderous Mouse who wants a piece of the action. Easy Rawlins is a fascinating creation driving a plot that carries a fine and bitter sting. With this first novel, Walter Mosley made a distinctly confident start to his career as a great and inspirational writer. New, pristine, first edition, second printing, in new, mylar-protected dust jacket. [Not remainder-marked or price-clipped] BUND

Synopsis

Walter Mosley's very well-received first book, introduces detective Easy Rawlins and centers around his transformation from day-laborer to detective. Set in Los Angeles in the 1940s, Rawlins takes on a side job to pay his mortgage after losing his job at a defense plant. His first mystery is trying to find a woman named Daphne Monet, a missing white woman who was known to frequent black jazz clubs.  Devil in a Blue Dress  was adapted into a film of the same title starring Denzel Washington.

About Joe Staats, Bookseller

Modern Literature, Mysteries, and More!
We specialize in collectible, contemporary signed first editions. First edition means the first printing. (Later printings of the first edition are typically not printed on acid-free paper, and should be avoided by collectors.) Signatures are obtained by us in person. Inscribed books sold by us may contain a line, a phrase, or a sketch that the author has chosen to add. Our signed books are not dedicated to anybody in particular (not to your grandmother, your Aunt Gladys, your ex-lover or your former cellmate), except in the rare case of a presentation copy from an author to a noteworthy person. All our books are hardcover, unless the book is an Advance Reading Copy, Uncorrected Proof, or PBO. You can expect that the books we send you will be as described, and in a physical condition worthy of the author’s having signed them. We do not sell remainder-marked books, signed or otherwise
