About This Item

London; Constable and Company Ltd., 1936., 1936. Hard Cover. FIRST EDITION. Quarto, pp. viii, 420. Frontispiece of the memorial tablet to Sir Charles Algernon Parsons plus 343 numbered illustrations, some within text, others to 96 plates and to 8 large fold-out diagrams. Publishers' maroon cloth with bevelled boards, gilt titles to spine and upper board and double border in blind to upper board. Top edge gilt. Spine very faintly sunned and lower board lightly surface scuffed. Ffep creased with ownership inscription in black ink: "T. Bowater Station Superintendent Worcester Power Station". Light creasing to single fold-out diagram otherwise contents clean. A Very Good copy. The two parts of the volume appeared independently in "The Engineer" in 1934 and 1935 respectively and are collected here in convenient form, describing the outstanding machines of their day in chronological order. Subject matter includes the application of the turbine to pumps, fans, blowers and compressors but not to marine propulsion, " a subject vast enough to demand a volume to itself". Heavyweight so a contribution towards increased postage costs will be requested for overseas delivery.
