B&W Illustrations; 9.20 X 6.40 X 1.10 inches; xviii, 302 pages; Hard cover has white boards with a red cloth spine with gold lettering; very faint rubbing to boards. DJ has slight rubbing; in a mylar cover. Pages are clean and tight; appears as if unused. Illustrated with b/w pictures. Originally published in 1962 in the United States by D. Van Nostrand Company as "Horseman's Progress" . A classic in equestrian literature. Drawing on the literature of the last 400 years, the author takes the reader from the Renaissance to the present discussing modern riding in Italy, France, Germany, England, and the United States as well as describing each country's contribution to the development of riding. Littauer ( 1892 – 1989) was an influential horseback riding master and the author of books and films on educated riding and the training of horses. Littauer's riding instruction was in great demand during his lifetime by both riding instructors and amateurs and he was an early, important and controversial advocate of the forward seat [Caprilli] riding system.
