Original brown cloth with gilt lettering and emblem to spine, embossed gilt emblem (BM NH - British Museum; Natural History) to front, ex-Cheltenham library, attractive library bookplate and presentation sticker from Trustees of the British Museum and library record card (no dates entered) affixed to front pastedown, blind embossed library stamp to title page, prelims and all plates (in the margin), hinges cracked, binding loose but holding, section of spine lifted at the base, corners and spine ends pushed/frayed, boards soiled/rubbed, gilt to spine dulled, edges very dusty, dints to top edge, frontispiece is stained, endpapers and title page browned, otherwise text pages predominantly very good (strain to stitching but binding holds); plates at rear waterstained to top and bottom without much affecting the images (adjacent text pages not stained), some spotting to later plates (rear endpapers browned/stained). Heavy book - extra postage required.. First Edition. Hardcover. Acceptable.
