Description:
"Departure Points: Essays from Youth on Oxford, Stock Cars and Other Mysteries" in entertaining new book of remembrances written by Michael D. Waters and printed by Rocky Heights Print and Binding in 2018. The book contains various stories about growing up in Cullman, Alabama, attending Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar, and various other subjects. The title of the principal Oxford story, "You Won't Learn Nothing Over There," is a quote from family friend and former Alabama Governor James "Big Jim" Folsom when he learned Waters had been selected as a Rhodes Scholar. Before he attended Oxford, Waters was childhood friends and a Rock 'n' Roll bandmate with "Little Jim" Folsom, Big Jim's namesake son and future Governor of Alabama. This story collection begins with a remembrance of Waters' father, who was paralyzed while traveling on military service in 1951. It also includes another story describing Waters' encounter with President Lyndon Johnson, who gave Waters a pocket knife with LBJ's name on it and told him, "Don't leave it at your girlfriend's house, or her parents will think I've been there." Later in life, Waters became an accomplished corporate securities lawyer, law professor, guitarist, pilot, and race car driver.
