'Deep as the Sea' is the life of a tough determined fighter.Throughout his career in the Royal Navy from 1907 to 1953,Bertie Packer always put his country and the Navy first but his family came a close second. In 1925 he married Joy Petersen. In the years that followed their marriage was constantly interrupted by the Navy's implacable demands, yet their letters kept them together.Joy Packer now tells her husband's story partly through extracts from his logs and letters and partly from her own diaries of their lives together and apart. To read this book is to observe the human side of two world wars and the years in between. Bertie Packer was in Australia in 1914,at the Battle of Jutland in 1916,in China during the Sino-Japanese War,in Germany at the birth of the Luftwaffe,Naval Attache in Turkey at the death of Kemal Ataturk. In WW2 he took part in the hunting down of the Bismarck, led the defeated Italian fleet into Malta, and was a signatory at the surrender of the German forces in Italy. In 1950 he went to South Africa,as Commander-in-Chief South Atlantic, and ended his naval career as a full admiral. One of his closest friends wrote of Bertie Packer: 'He was certainly the happiest man I have ever known. . . ' But 'Deep as the Sea' is more than a biography or 'war book',it is the unfolding of an enduring love story and of a marriage and family life which, though frequently tested, was full of excitement and a zest for living.
