A complete Modern Library reprint edition of this most famous work in the field of world history, in which Mr. Gibbon clearly and thoroughly details the decline of the Empire of Rome and offers theories as to why it happened. An unabridged two volume, mis-matched Modern Library set, indexed in vol. 2. --- Volume I in Toledano spine G4 / blue cloth / gilt titling on black cover & spine blocks / black topstain / illustrated jacket style Gb, verso advertises 262 titles in ML catalog. Likely published c.1938. --- Volume II in Toledano spine G3 / blue cloth / gilt titling on cover & spine / faded black topstain / yellow jacket style Gb, verso advertises 225 titles in ML catalog. Likely published c.1934. ML #G6.1 & G7.1. This work more common in the 3-volume Modern Library version --- Both volumes in about Very Good+ condition, lacking interior markings, though a small Macy's rubberstamping is present on rear endpaper of V. II. Jackets also quite nice, though with small tears and chips to edges and wrapped in removable archival mylar protectors. (NOTE: Due to the weight of this item, extra shipping charges may be requested for any shipment other than by USPS Media Mail in the US.); Octavo (8 to 9 in. tall); ix, 1303, xii, 1476 pages .

Synopsis

The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire was written by English historian Edward Gibbon and published in six volumes. Volume I was published in 1776, and went through six printings. Volumes II and III were published in 1781; volumes IV, V, VI in 1788-89. The original volumes were published in quarto sections, a common publishing practice of the time.
