London: Derek Verschoyle, 1954. First edition. Hardcover. Good +/vg/good +. Sm 8vo. In the red publisher's cloth. pp. 296. A previous owner's name and address stamp to title page. In the unclipped dust jacket, which has some small chips to spine ends and a couple of small closed tears, now repaired with archival tape to verso. A few pages have small snags to leading page edges, barely noticeable. Otherwise a well kept, tight copy, clean and unmarked. Jacket now housed in a Brodart protective cover. Translated from the French, Merle offers a fictionalised first person account by his protagonist Rudolf Lang, based on the life story of Rudolf Höß, camp commandant of Auschwitz in WWII.

Description:
Chatto & Windus, London, 1934. Book. Good. Hardcover. 1st Edition. The first English-language edition. 8vo. 295pp. Brown cloth lettered in gold at the spine and with a small gilt decoration. Cloth a little spotted and with just a trace of wear to several extremities. A touch of spotting to the endpapers and browning to a blank preliminary and concluding leaf, and the publisher's top edge stain just a little patchy. Really quite a nice, crisp copy, lacking the uncommon dust wrapper. The basis for John Huston's magnificent Bogart movie, this Creighton translation precedes Traven's own translation which he produced for the American issue (Knopf, 1935 - the author is on record stating his preference for this version)..

London and New York: John Lane The Bodley Head, 1898. First Edition. Printed wrappers. Good. 8vo., (17cm). Number Six in the Bodley Booklets series. pp. 118 [8]. To flyleaf, an old bookseller's pencilled note and what appears to be a name; on first blank, in a fine hand, the name Hugh M Tosh, dated 1908. The backstrip has worn away, with just a strip with the title remaining, and the rear wrapper is detached. Wrappers somewhat chipped, worn to tips, with creases to front, darkened, a few minor marks. Even so, if somewhat fragile, the binding is holding perfectly well. Rolfe's first major publication after Tarcissus some 18 years earlier and which launched his career as a writer.

New York, Grove Press, 2022, trade paperback, 272 pp, Advance Uncorrected Proof (ARC), New. Straight, tight and clean with no wear or markings in bright, pictorial card covers, no dustjacket as issued. The pieces in this collection, written between 1956 and 1961 and including short fiction, a radio play, and a stunning early novel, offer startling insights into Cohens imagination and creative process.
