Boase is a former Vice-Chancellor of Oxford University and the author of many books, including Kingdoms and Strongholds of the Crusadres and editor of the Oxford History of English Art. In this book, Prof Boase deals with death-very real and everywhere, in the Middle Ages, public and brutal. He examines the grim reality of death: in battle, by execution, and by the plague. Then he describes burial customs, with the exquisite tombs, monuments, and chantry chapels that are silent witness to the lavish ceremonies and pageantry of the middle ages.
