About This Item

MP3 Audio CD. Trying circumstances are often the launching ramp for great characters, and Dawn O'Hara has certainly proven herself to be one of the more outstanding, genuine and inspiring characters you will find in any book. This is the story of a girl who laughs ? quite literally ? in the face of adversity, and whose charming, witty personality is just the right ingredient for true friendships to thrive.

Dawn O'Hara, The Girl Who Laughed, is the story of Dawn O'Hara, a girl living and working in New York, who suddenly finds herself in the 28th year of her life having to return to her home in Michigan, for medical reasons, but without any kind of real future to look forward to. Although her strength of character is unquestionable, as she had spent much of her youth living in boarding houses and working hard to pay for the advanced care that her mentally ill husband required, she now feels like a woman aged prematurely, who has no idea what to start with her life.

Despite the daunting circumstances, Dawn finds strength and support in her sister Norah, along with her family, who support and help her during her time of need. She soon finds, however, that adversity cannot thrive in the presence of a lighthearted approach to life. In fact, her carefree, humorous attitude soon brings her a new job, and even the affections of a German doctor. But how can she ever act on her impulses when she is still married to a husband bound to a mental institution?

Written by Edna Ferber about a century ago, this amazing story still rings remarkably true and current to many readers today. Dawn's story is one that many can relate to, and her problems, as well as her masterfully depicted story, have proven to be quite timeless for anyone who has tasted the controversies and joys of life in any meaningful amount.
