London: Macmillan. 1889. 1st ed., octavo, pp [v]-xvi; [1]-494, (ii, adverts), b&w fronts portrait (author), professionally recased in original cloth bds, gilt titled and ruled spine, small hole at centre. The ownership signature of Nicholas Murray Butler, dated 1889. (Butler was a diplomat, educator, and recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize.) Very good condition Wallace was best known for his formulation of the theory of evolution by natural selection, which predated Charles Darwin's published contributions. In this Preface he writes: "The present work treats the problem of the Origin of Species on the same general lines as were adopted by Darwin; but from the standpoint reached after nearly thirty years of discussion, with an abundance of new facts and the advocacy of many new or old theories." 1st edition.
