The study, described in detail in this book, stimulated DARPA to initiate a major new program in neural networks that began in 1989. This study was undertaken by DARPA to ascertain and appraise the state of neural network research and applicaitons. The study primarily addressed work in the United States. Hundreds of neural network researchers and practitioners were interviewed by various panelists, Logistics and support was provided by MIT/Lincoln Laboratories. The original goal of the artificial neural networks approach was to solve problems in the same way that a human brain would. However, over time, attention moved to performing specific tasks, leading to deviations from biology. Artificial neural networks have been used on a variety of tasks, including computer vision, speech recognition, machine translation and medical diagnosis.
