About This Item

MP3 Audio CD. The Dark House is a thrilling mystery story published by George Manville Fenn in 1885. The author started his career as an editor and journalist, then in 1867 he started writing stories for children and adults. This book shows his mystery-weaving talent at its best ? Fenn can create a gloomy atmosphere full of suspense like no one else.

The novel starts with the death of a reclusive man who is known to have been extremely wealthy. His will is just as eccentric as he was ? the document summons all his heirs to his house for the reading, heirs who don?t know each other and don?t know the deceased either, but all of whom have previously received some sort of help from the old man. The will hints at some tremendous riches hidden somewhere in the late old man?s house, so everybody starts searching for the treasure, but they are soon disappointed because the place hinted at in the will proves to be empty. The story moves on with a number of deaths, murders and accidents alike. The person who can finally identify the place where the treasures are hidden appears only very late in the story, so Fenn manages to keep up the tension until the last page of the book.

George Manville Fenn was among the most celebrated writers of his time. Mostly self-educated, Fenn had critical views of the society he lived in, views that he shared not only through his articles and essays, but also in his stories that raised the attention of many of his contemporaries, including Charles Dickens. His most notable works include Hollowdell Grange (his first story), Christmas Penny Readings, The Blue Dragoons, The Golden Magnet, The Chaplain?s Craze, The King?s Sons, and others, many of which are unknown today, but will hopefully come back in trend.
