New York: Grosset & Dunlap Publishers, 1932. First Edition. Small 8vo (7 1/2" x 5 1/8"), green cloth with black lettering on spine and with black bi-plane on front cover, illustrated with a B&W frontispiece of a crashed bi-plane, Mylar-protected colorful dust jacket (unclipped) depictiing a lone British biplane in a dogfight with several Germans, orange endpapers with dogfighting, 240 pages. A young American lieutenant joins the British "Phantom Five" and becomes one of the British Flying Corps' Ace's--like other pilots in the Lafayette Escadrille. The brave pilots fight in their DeHavilands and the skies of France against the Fokkers of the Bosche. Thomson Burtis (1896-1971) was an American writer who had served for five years as a pilot during the Great War. He wrote more than two hundred stories for pulp magazines such as Adventure (magazine). Several of his works were adapted to film including In Old Oklahoma. EXCEPTIONAL CONDITION with a SUPERB DUST JACKET, clean pages and only the slightest toning.
