About This Item
Paris: Typis Jacobi Guerin, ad Ripam Augustinianorum, 1730. Spine faded to pink, with minor rubbing, rear flyleaves foxed, some pages toned, but complete and generally clean and sound. Quarto. lxvi, 684p, (ii), 16p, (cl, index). Extra engraved and illustrated title page including the arms of the Dauphin, engraved head- and tail-pieces, an engraved chart and an inserted engraved plate.
Bound in full red morocco, the spine with gilt titles and panel ornaments, the covers with border rule and corner pieces in blind. Scholarly edition with extensive notes and annotations.
"During this century Latin Scholarship flourished far less vigorously in Africa than in Gaul, where it is well represented by Ausonius and his circle, who had a direct and intimate knowledge of the Latin classics. The life of Ausonius (c. 310-c. 393) extends from near the beginning to near the end of the century; so that in Latin literature the fourth century may be described as the the century of Ausonius." (Sandys. History of Classical Scholarship, Vol. I, p. 221.).
