Description:
Schwabacher'sche Verlagsbuchhandlung, Stuttggart, 1910. Hardcover. Good/No Jacket. 219 pages (complete). In German throughout. Teutonic (Schwabascher) font. A carelessly stored copy. The boards are scruffy with wear, stains, marks all about. They are yet comfortable and sure. The guttering along the title page is cracked but the general security of the book is unaffected. Gift inscription to Franz Spiegel, a lawyer in Kiel, dated 1919 (a small, loose, ex-libris plate signed by Spiegel is also to be found). The contents are clean, clear, confident (allowing the beautiful font to be seen boldly), certain, competent. fk. Our orders are shipped using tracked courier delivery services.

NP: Hudson Lowe, ND. No binding. Cut signature of Sir Hudson Lowe on 3-1/2 x 2-1/4 inch paper.
Hudson Lowe, Anglo-Irish soldier and colonial administrator. In 1815 he was appointed to oversee the incarceration of Napoleon on St Helena, and the following year he became Governor of the island. His period as Bonaparte's gaoler was controversial, as his constant paranoia that the deposed leader would somehow be rescued from his island prison, led to allegations of heavy-handedness and tactlessness.

Description:
Castle, James Town [St.Helena], 17 September 1819. About 400 words on 4 pp. 12 x 8 inches, fine. A rare reference to the Persons at Longwood by Lt.-General Sir Hudson Lowe (1769-1844), Governor of St. Helena (1815-1821) and Napoleons gaoler. Barry OMeara, Napoleons doctor on St.Helena, quarrelled with Lowe and returned to England in October 1818. In a letter to the Admiralty he suggested that Napoleons life was not safe in Lowes hands. OMeara, dismissed from the service, wrote Napoleon In Exile (1822).
