Halfway through their projected one hundred and twenty day voyage, Captain Tom Dudley and his crew of three men were beset by a monstrous storm off the coast of Africa. After four days of battling towering waves and hurricane gales, their yacht was finally crushed by a ferocious forty foot wave. When, after twenty four days, they were finally rescued by a passing yacht, the Moctezuma, only three men were left and they were in an appalling condition. The ordeal that they endured and the trial which followed their eventual return to England held the whole nation - from the lowliest ship's deckhand to Queen Victoria herself - spellbound during the following winter. As an Ex U.S. Navy man I have always been interested in Naval Customs, Traditions and History. This Book Is about one of the basic human needs.... survival. What lengths would a person go to ensure their own survival in what appears to be a hopeliss situation? This book deals with the age old question of the survival instincts of humans. What is right? What is Wrong? What is Moral or Immoral? they were not the first to face this question. What makes this book unique is the aftermath, the trial of the survivors. Men driven by hunger to do the deplorable having to face and explain at a trial no less, of their actions to others what they could not possibly understand. What would you do is not a fair question unless you have to face these circumstances yourself.
