Extended Description and Notes
Émile Zola (1840-1902) was a prominent French novelist and political activist, known for his theories of naturalism, which underlie his 20-novel series Les Rougon-Macquart. Subtitled "Natural and social history of a family under the Second Empire," it follows the life of one family examining the impact of social environment on people by varying the social, economic, political and professional milieu in which each novel is set.
La Curee, translated The Kill, is the second book in Zola's long series (20 volumes) Les Rougon-Macquart. This story was made into a film by Roger Vadim in 1966, with Jane Fonda.
It includes a long introduction by Henry James. The translation is by Alexander Texeira de Matos. The Game Is Over (original title La Curée) is a 1966 French-Italian film directed by Roger Vadim; starring Jane Fonda, Michel Piccoli, and Peter McEnery.
Pot-Boille, translated Stew Pot, is a critique of the hypocritical behaviors of the bourgeois of the second French Empire; set in a Parisian apartment. Translated by Percy Pinkerton, with an essay by Guy De Maupassant.
La Terre, The Earth, centers on nature, farming, and the importance of the natural landscape, how families and traditions play a role in its existence; it is a story of hereditary and environment. Translated by Dowson, with an essay by Harry Thurston Peck.
