London: George Allen, 1902. Leather. Very Good Indeed. 7.5" by 5". None. A prize bound copy of this collection of lectures, 'The Crown of Wild Olives'. In a Baker A Son of Clifton binding, for the Clifton College. The college's crest and motto is gilt stamped to the front board. Prize bookplate to front pastedown indicates prior owner to be a J K Clark who won the book for Latin Prose in 1904. This book is a collection of four lectures on industry and war. The lectures are titled 'Work', 'Traffic', 'War' and 'the future of England'. His lecture 'Traffic' was widely admired and relates to taste and morality. John Ruskin was the leading English art critic of the Victorian era. He was also a prominent social thinker and philanthropist who wrote essays and treatises on several subjects. He lectured widely in the 1860's all over the country. The lectures in this book are taken from his lectures at the Working Men's Institute, Camberwell, the Royal Military Academy in Woolwich and at Bradford Town Hall. In a full calf prize binding with Clifton College's school crest gilt stamped to front board. In a Baker A Son, Clifton binding, as indicated from binder's stamp to verso of front endpaper. Externally, smart with some minor rubbing to the joints and extremities. Small loss to head of spine. Some rubbing to the raised bands as well. A few very minor marks to boards. Prize bookplate from Clifton College awarded for Latin Prose to KJ K Clark dated 1904. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright with instances of light scattered spots. A small flower has been pressed between pages 273 and 274 resulting in a small amount of offsetting. Very Good Indeed
