About This Item
New York: P.M. Haverty, 1868. The major work by John Patrick Prendergast (1808-1893), considered the "first and seminal work in the area" (Jameel Hampton). A.M. Sullivan said it was "one of the most remarkable books ever printed in the English language." This may be hyperbole, but this is an important work of scholarship. Although available electronically and in reprint, the original is EXTREMELY SCARCE. This is a Very Good copy of the First American Edition. Green cloth binding, stamped in the blind, with spine lettering and a harp on both covers filled with gilt. Clean text, bright and free of marking; 288 pages, with an index of subjects, an index of names, and three maps. Both free endpapers appear to have been torn out, but there is a penciled previous-owner name and address on the front paste-down. From the style of penmanship, Quercus ventures that it is contemporary. The corners are bumped, and the covers have a bit of bubbling and mottling. No dustjacket. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. First American Edition.. Hard Cover. Very Good/No Jacket.
