New York: The Crisis Publishing Company, Inc, 1939. First Edition. Slim quarto (27.75cm); original photo-illustrated wrappers, stapled; pp.227-254; illus. Light wear, handling, and dust-soil to wrappers, with a few tiny nicks and tears, and old rubber-stamps from Yale University's Social Sciences Department on wrappers and a few internal pages; complete; Very Good. Complete issue of this long-running African American magazine and official publishing organ of the NAACP, conceived by W.E.B. Du Bois in 1910, which under his editorial hand quickly became "the most influential monthly magazine in black America...Throughout the years, the magazine continued to identify what are unquestionably the crucial areas of decision that will most determine the future condition of black life. The magazine devoted considerable space to African religion, academic matters, editorials, published letters, music, reports on conferences and recognized black accomplishments both literary and political" (BLOCKSON 55, p.44). Contents include contributions by Lucile Bluford, G. James Fleming (on Dr. Howard Thurman), William S. Bernard, James K. Baker, and others.
