About This Item

London, 1854. Third edition, dated October 16, 49.5 x 67.5 cms, insets of the Black Sea region and Sevastopol, original hand colour, laid on linen, folding into publisher’s cloth covers, publisher’s advertisement (‘recent publications’ relating to the conflict) attached to map, facing pastedown, very minor wear. The map was published a month after an allied Anglo-French and Ottoman expeditionary force was landed to invest Sevastopol, and a day before the first bombardment of the city. James Wyld junior inherited a thriving business on the death of his father in 1836. He was elected a fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and succeeded his father as Geographer to Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. Map
