About This Item

(New Brunswick): (Rutgers Center for Innovative Printmaking), 1993. Limited Edition. Folio in a case. Fine. Feldman, Walter. No. 7 of 18, folio size, seven unbound folio sheets, signed by Walter Feldman. Walter Sidney Feldman (1925-2017) received numerous awards and critical praise spanning a lifetime achievement over seven decades; his paintings were shown in numerous one-man and group exhibitions in New York, Mexico City, London, Milan, and Boston. Since 1985, he had designed and published books under the Ziggurat Press imprint he created, and his books are now in more than 150 public collections, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Albert and Victoria Museum in London (n. b. info from Legacy website).

This work, "The Creation", issued in an edition of only eighteen copies, was done as a gift to his son, Steven Chaim, on the occasion of his Bar Mitzvah. The work consists of seven unbound folio sheets, an introduction followed by one for each of the six days of the creation story, with each sheet containing a few verses from that story (according to the Masoretic text). What makes the work sensational - filling one's senses - are the incredible lithographs on each sheet, surrounding and illuminating the biblical texts. Feldman had held these six serial images in his imagination for a long time, making a similar six part painting series in 1955. When invited in January of 1993 to be a visiting artist at the Rutgers Center for Innovative Printmaking, he worked with the director, Judith Brodsky, and the master printer, Eileen Foti, to create this marvellous work using toner as a lithographic drawing material, which allowed him the ability to "play" with the images.

___DESCRIPTION: Unbound folio sheets, each folded once, the title page being on green hand made rag paper produced at the Rutgers Center, the following six sheets each on a different style and colour of Arches handmade paper, the artwork and text on these six sheets on the two inside pages of each folded sheet, printed on a Vandercook proving press at The Ziggurat Press (Feldman's imprint); folio size (approximately 15" tall); the introduction and each of the six lithographs signed and numbered by Walter Feldman; limited edition of only 18 copies, this number 7. The sheets are encased in a rust-orange cloth clamshell case, cream paper label on the front with black lettering.

___CONDITION: Both the sheets and case are in fine condition; clean, crisp, as new.

___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details.
