About This Item
Carlisle: printed by J. Milliken, and sold by R. Faulder, London,, 1786. First edition, defending the Biblical interpretation of creation and of geological time, and seeking to reconcile the increasing geological evidence as outlined by Whitehurst and others with the traditional Christian belief of creation as a single process. It is worth noting that the work was published just eight years before William Paley's View of the Evidences of Christianity, and that Paley's name is on the subscribers' list, joining other notable subscribers including Joseph Priestley, William Cullen, Richard Price, and Richard Neave, governor of the Bank of England. Uncommon: ESTC locating ten copies. Octavo. Uncut in the original boards, rebacked with the original spine laid down, printed paper label. Complete with the full list of subscribers, the terminal subscriber leaf added later and not always present. Loss to original spine backing at foot, a little soiled and worn, holding firm, contents clean save for sporadic very light foxing. A very good copy. ESTC T116481.
