About This Item

(ca 1767). 270 x 380 mm. Original watercolour by the celebrated antiquary and illustrator Francis Grose (1731-1791), one of Dudley Snelgrove's favourite artists. The perspective of the scene is essentially the same as in Grose's "The Corn Mill at Wandsworth, Surrey" (The Collection of the Late Dudley Snelgrove, F.S.A., Lot 239 - Sotheby's London, 1992), though there are no figures on the bridge here, and the sails of the windmill have swung to the left. The mill was still present into the mid-1800s. The river shown is the Wandle. The picture has been withdrawn from a frame, and can be supplied with or without the surrounding card mount board. .
