Minor bumping to the backstrip edges. Photographic dustwrapper with black and white titles to the front panel and backstrip. Black and white photograph of author to the rear fold over panel. Hint of rubbing to the dustwrapper corners. A young American translator is in Paris to try and sort out his life. One night he and another American are attacked at their hotel in a random act of violence, and during the same night the older American dies in his bed. The older man is a poet and has left an unfinished manuscript in the younger man's hands. While recuperating in a villa in Tuscany (a house of a friend of the older man) the younger man comes to the realisation that everybody is using him for their own needs. At the same time there is the history of the Villa in which a family of Jews hid during World War II and then convert to Catholicism, and the younger man realises he himself will have to do his own conversion (of sorts) to survive and to go forward.
