A collection of articles on the famed artillery battalion, most of which were written by its members. Contains the diaries of William S. White (3rd Co.), T. Roberts Baler (2nd Co.), Creed T. Davis (2nd Co., including prison narrative), and John Waldrop and William Y. Morris (both of 2nd Co., diaries combined), plus corrections to White's diary by Col. W.E. Cutshaw; "Organization of First Company and John Brown Raid" by Capt. Henry Hundall (2nd Co.); rolls of the 2nd and 3rd companies; "The Battle of Big Bethel" by Rev. E.C. Gordon (3rd Co.); "The First Detachment at Fredericksburg" by Reuben B. Pleasants; other recollections; and some official reports. Edited by Carlton McCarthy, private in 2nd Co. and publisher of the first three numbers. The second pamphlet, A Diary of the War, or What I Saw of It, by William S. White, "gives an excellent account of the experiences of a member of the Richmond Howitzers.... White naturally gives most attention to military matters, but had much to say about the people he met." Coulter, 473.
